The Otis-Bison High School football team concluded its most productive season since the 1980s with a second place finish in the Eight-Man Division-II state tournament.
The Cougars entered the season wondering who would step up to replace graduated quarterback Kevin Wissman.
Now that the season has drawn to a close, the Cougars can boast four players named to the all-Central Prairie League first team. The eight-man football team placed more players on all-league teams with nine than could be legally on the field at one time.
Otis-Bison was led by senior Michael Hlavaty, who was given all-league status for four positions, linebacker, kicker, running back and punter. As a linebacker, Hlavaty was voted in unanimously.
Hlavaty made 57 tackles and two sacks defensively. As a running back, he carried the ball 71 times, covering 779 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns for Otis-Bison.
The Cougars Josh Krom, as an offensive lineman, was the only other player in the Central Prairie League to be voted into a position unanimously. Krom was also a first-team defensive lineman.
On the defensive side of the ball, Krom terrorized the opposing team’s quarterback, leading the Cougars with six sacks.
Dominic Trapp, a 6-foot senior who caught 19 passes for 192 yards and three TDs, was named first-team tight end, and Matthew Crotinger received an honor for first-team defensive back, as well as honorable mention kickoff return specialist and wide receiver.
The Cougars had five more players finish in second-team or honorable mention all-league positions.
Macksville
The Macksville Mustangs claim three players on the first team of the CPL.
Dakota Allison led the way with two first-team placements, linebacker and running back. Allison also received a spot on the second team for his role as kicker.
Adam Oak was named first-team utility back and kickoff return specialist, while Kyle Bunker was listed as a first-team lineman on both sides of the ball.
The Mustangs have two more players on the honorable mention list and one on second-team player.
Quivira Heights
The Quivira Heights football team finished the season with four players on the all-CPL first team, including three on the first-team defense.
Gunner Phelan took home first-team defensive back honors along with second-team quarterback.
Nick Schepmann was a first-team defensive lineman and a second-team running back. Taylor Siemsen was a first-team linebacker.
Jordan Trevino claimed a first-team spot as a wide receiver as the only offensive first-team player for the Thunderbirds.
St. John
St. John standouts Zack Minnis and Jacob Blunt lead the Tigers as the only two players on the CPL second team.
Minnis was placed onto the league’s second-team defense as a defensive back, while Blunt was on the offensive line.
The Tigers also claim four players on the honorable mention team.
Claflin
Claflin running back Benn Kirmer raked in the all-league honors in the CPL with three second-team placements.
Kirmer was honored for his roles as running back, defensive back and kickoff return specialist.
Matt Beren and Kevin Klug also made all-league teams.
Hoisington
The Hoisington Cardinals, who finished the season with a 6-3 record, saw seven players given first-team all-Mid-Central Activities Association honors this year.
Brady Demel led the Cardinals as both first-team wide receiver and defensive back.
Ryan Bieberle joined Demel as a first-team defensive back and cashed in as a first-team kick returner.
On top of the seven players on the first team, Hoisington had eight other players fall onto the honorable mention list.
Ellinwood
The Ellinwood football team had four players claim first-team all-MCAA honors this season, while having three more as honorable mention athletes.
Senior lineman Jake Christiansen led the Eagles by landing first-team honors on both sides of the ball. Garrett Hays joins Christiansen as a first-team offensive lineman.
Chantz Clawson, who had his season cut short by an injury, still got voted in as a first-team punter and an honorable mention defensive back.
Dalton Garrett was the final first-team player, making the league’s squad as a running back.
Larned
Only one name finds its way onto the lists for all-MCAA teams for Larned: Brady Keith.
Keith led his team in rushing yards, rushing TDs and tackles.
As such, Keith was named first-team all-league running back and honorable mention defensive back.
Stafford
Stafford claims two players on the all-Heart of The Plains League teams this season.
Senior Tanner Newell was named one of two second-team tight ends.
Alex Setter was an honorable mention all-league defensive back.
