Garden City advances; Hays, Dodge City ousted

There’s only one Western Athletic Conference team remaining after Friday night’s opening round of the state football playoffs.
Class 6A Garden City improved to 7-2, beating Wichita South 35-7 on Friday night. The Buffaloes have the unenviable task of taking on consensus top-ranked and defending state champion Wichita Heights (10-0) this coming Friday night in the quarterfinals.
Heights blanked Washburn Rural 43-0 Friday night.
Manhattan (10-0) annihilated Dodge City 55-0 Friday night in other 6A action involving a WAC school.
In 5A, Hutchinson held off host Hays 27-21 Friday night as the Indians finish their season with an 8-2 record.
During the regular season, Hays, Great Bend and Garden City each posted 3-1 WAC records to finish as tri-champions.
In conference play, Great Bend beat Garden City in head-to-head competition; Garden City beat Hays head-to-head; and Hays beat Great Bend 43-42 in overtime in the WAC showdown and district opener.
