SALINA — Alex Reed continued to lead the Great Bend High School track and field team after his return from an injury sustained during the football season, taking first place in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes on Friday at Salina Central.
Reed, who was the state champion in the 200 dash his sophomore year as well as state champion in the 400 dash both his sophomore and junior years, finished with a time of 22.91 seconds in the 200 and 48.59 in the 400.
“He did run both the 200 and the 400,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said. “He did absolutely great in the 400. He turned in his second-fastest time in that event. It was just a great performance on his part.
“I think it was the first meet that he looked up to 100 percent.”
Reed’s school-record time in the 400 is 48.37.
The Panthers finished in third place behind Hays and Manhattan with 89 points. The Lady Panthers struggled finishing in eighth place with 17.
“I think it was the biggest meet of the year on the boys side,” Black said. “Both the girls and boys did very well. The girls just didn’t have enough people to do well as a team.”
Matt Moyd turned in the top time in the 110 hurdles with 15.21.
Chon Chavez took second place in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:17.36 and fifth place in the 1,600 run, crossing the finish line at 4:39.83.
For the Lady Panthers, top finishes were in short supply. But Jacy Quade took second place in the discus with a heave of 129 feet, 11 3/4 inches. She also finished in fourth place in the shot put with 37-0.
“We took a total of six girls so we had more missing than not on Friday,” Black said. “We didn’t run any relays and we just had a few individual events. It was teh variety show at the high school so most of the girls were singing in the choir.
“Quade continues to get better every meet. She’s had back-to-back best distances in the discus.”
On Thursday, Great Bend heads to Dodge City to compete in the Western Athletic Conference meet, which is slated to start at 3 p.m.
