GBHS JVs Ramirez and Nieto unbeaten at Lyons

LYONS— Great Bend High School’s JV tennis team racked up 16 points for fourth place at Tuesday’s tournament in Lyons. Five teams were in competition with Lyons (23), Larned (20) and Hays (18) winning the top three spots in order.

In No. 1 singles competition Jahtziri Lara finished with a 1-2 record. Lara opened with a 6-4 loss to Mallory Vesper of Lyons. She then defeated Larned’s Jorgie Kimble by a 6-2 decision before falling 6-3 to Kaitlyn Schaben of Hays.

Madison Murphy represented the Panther JV in No. 2 singles and also finished with a 1-2 record good for third place. Murphy fell 6-1 in the opening round to Ashlyn Troyer of Lyons before beating Jillian Edgin of Larned, 6-3. She then suffered 6-2 setback to Bailey Campbell of Hays.

Turning to doubles Alyssia Strickland and Mindy Wittig represented GBHS in the first flight and placed fourth at 1-3. The two dropped an opening round loss to Jess Winford and Kelsey Jenkins of Lyons by a score of 6-1. Strickland and Wittig then fell in a 6-3 decision to Larned’s Macy Haas and Katelyn Sanger  before suffering a tiebreaking loss to the Hays duet of Peyton Augustine and Lakin Ditter 7-6 (7-4). They then defeated Katelyn Reh and Macy Munson of Ellinwood, 6-4.

In No. 2 doubles Pricilla Ramirez and Jessica Nieto went undefeated to collect first place honors. The pair glided past Monica Pando and Gia Bryant of Lyons by a score of 6-1 before downing Casey Danler and Cheyenne Lile of Larned, 6-2. Ramirez and Nieto then finished off Katie Weisenborn and Rebekah Fuller of Hays and Ellinwood’s Shelbe Henkel and Melissa Demitt by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
