HAYS — The Great Bend High School softball team split a doubleheader with Hays on Thursday night, losing the first game, 3-0, but winning the nightcap, 3-1.
The Lady Panthers’ record stands at 10-2, including a Western Athletic Conference record of 5-1.
Hays, which entered the doubleheader with an undefeated record, moves to 7-1 and 1-1 in the WAC.
The second game concluded in dramatic fashion.
With the Lady Panthers up 3-1, a pair of GBHS errors helped Hays load the bases.
Great Bend’s Jordan Haney battled with the Lady Indians batter.
“We had four errors in that second game behind Jordan,” GBHS head coach Carrie Minton said. “I think two of them came in that seventh inning. Haney really battled with their final batter. I think she fouled off eight pitches with a full count.
“She finally flied out to right field.”
Samantha Dreiling recorded the final out of the game to give the Lady Panthers the win.
Great Bend found some success at the plate in the second game with Stephanie Morrison leading the way, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a walk.
Nicole Reiter went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Haney recorded an RBI in the first inning to get Great Bend started. Abby Morrison got an RBI and Lexie Brack drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
“In the second game, they started a new pitcher and we just came out more aggressive at the plate,” Minton said. “We opened that first inning with two hits and that run. That was the first time we’d been able to get a run all day. So they went back to the same gal that threw in the first game.”
In game one, the Lady Indians jumped ahead by one run in the first inning and two more in the fifth, relying on a solid pitching performance from Katie Schumacher. She pitched seven shutout innings in the first game and came in as a reliever in the second game.
The Lady Panthers only mustered three hits against Schumacher in the first game.
“They had a pretty decent pitcher,” Minton said. “She was definitely one of the better pitchers we’ve seen this season, but we just weren’t aggressive. The girls just weren’t ready to step up in the box.”
Abby Morrison went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and Reiter went 1-for-3 with a single.
The Lady Panthers committed three errors in the first game and left three runners on base.
GBHS travels to Scott City on Tuesday.
