Both teams are 16-4 overall and playing host to Class 5A regional tournaments on Tuesday in Great Bend.
The No. 2 seed in both baseball and softball, Great Bend High School is one of two 5A regional hosts. Top-seeded Hays is the other.
Great Bend’s Panthers baseball team, which is riding a seven-game winning streak, plays seventh-seeded Topeka West (5-15) in Tuesday’s opener at 2 at Al Burns Memorial Field.
No. 3 seed Salina Central (12-8) meets No. 6 seed McPherson (6-14) in the 4 o’clock game, followed by a regional championship game between the two winners at 6. A berth in the state tournament at Eck Stadium on the Wichita State University campus on May 27-28 will be at stake.
The Lady Panthers, who clinched a regional home berth with a 4-1 win over McPherson on Thursday, will take on seventh-seeded Wichita West (1-19) at 4:30 p.m. in Tuesday’s softball regional at Harms Field. It follows a 3 o’clock opener between Valley Center (15-5) and Liberal (6-14).
The two winning teams will meet in the regional title game at 6. The champion advances to the state tournament at Two-Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita on May 27-28.
Hays’ softball team is 19-1 and enters regional play with a first-round bye. The Lady Indians will face either Newton or McPherson (both 10-10) in a 5:45 title game on Tuesday.
Hays’ baseball team is 18-2. The Indians will face Newton (13-7 ) at 4 on Tuesday, preceded by the Valley Center (10-10) and Salina South (8-12) game at 2.
The two winners meet at 6 for the regional championship and a trip to Wichita.
