Great Bend High School’s softball team was in complete control of Game 1 during a doubleheader against Salina-Sacred Heart on Friday evening, winning 6-0.
The Lady Panthers completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
“I felt like Sacred Heart is a really good team,” GBHS head coach Carrie Minton said. “They had pretty strong pitching. It seems like it has been hard for our girls to get into a groove this season with the postponements. They had to practice inside the day before.”
Hunter Middleton pitched a one-hitter, giving up a single in the second. She had eight strikeouts and hit one batter in Game 1.
“Hunter threw a really good game,” Minton said. “So did Braylin (Bretz, who started Game 2). Hunter gave up only one hit, and Braylin gave up six, so they both did very well out there.”
Middleton helped her own cause on offense, driving an RBI triple into center field in the second inning to give the Lady Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
Stephanie Morrison struck a one-run home run in the third, Kelsie Doll drove in a run in the fourth and McKenna Mauler hit a solo shot over the center-field wall in the fifth.
Sacred Heart pitcher Hillary Williams walked in a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 6-0.
In the second game, Morrison led off with a walk in the bottom of the first. She stole second base and scored on an error.
The Lady Knights knotted the score in the top of the sixth when Bretz surrendered a one-run homer to Williams.
The Lady Panthers got the run back in the bottom of the inning.
Morrison led off with a double and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Kaylie Doll drove her in with a slap bunt.
Middleton came in to pitch in the seventh for the save.
Great Bend has a trio of Western Athletic Conference games this week.
The Lady Panthers travel to Hays on Tuesday for a doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
Then they hit the road again on Thursday for a twinbill against Garden City, starting at 3, before hosting Liberal on Saturday at 4.
