Great Bend High School bowler Jacob Holden performs his best against Liberal.
The Panthers’ left-handed sparkplug rolled a 635 series to spark an 11-0 Western Athletic Conference sweep of Liberal Thursday at Walnut Bowl.
Earlier, this season Holden rolled a career best 751 series on games of 246, 257 and 248 at Liberal. He was working his sharp-breaking ball right into the pocket.
“I found my line right off the bat,” said Holden, who rolled games of 199, 225 and 211. “I bowled really well yesterday in practice and tried to do the same thing today.”
The sweep kept Great Bend’s boys in first place heading to the Feb. 16 Western Athletic Conference meet at Dodge City with a 53-13 record.
“We didn’t want to give away any points heading into the WAC,” Holden said. “It was really important to go 11-0.”
Great Bend’s boys defeated Liberal 833-668, 883-661 and 824-668 for a 543-pin lead. The Panthers swept the Baker games 243-137, 211-153 and 208-120 to post three consecutive 200-plus games for the first time this season.
The Panthers swept the top six positions in both boys and girls divisions to complete a perfect day. Runner-up A.J. Roberts (626) shot games of 197, 226 and 203. He was followed by Blake Sheets (610), Brodie Owens (597), Jordan Black (583) and Kameron Keener (534). All six players rolled at least one 200 game.
“When we get going as a team, it’s better for everyone,” Holden said. “When we get into motion, it’s hard to stop. That’s the first time we’ve rolled three 200 games in the Baker format.”
• GIRLS — Panther medalist Kylynn Keeler rolled a career high 624 series on games of 201, 211 and 212 to beat teammate Allie Brodrick (593) to spark an equally dominant 11-0 sweep of Liberal.
Keeler also shot a trio of 200 games against Liberal last year.
“That was pretty good for my last home games,” she said. “I was physically and mentally ready today. Everything was working today.”
Rounding out the girls sweep were runner-up Brodrick (593), Jordan Vsetecka (582), Elsi Miller (457), Lexy Fox (457) and Jessica Disque (439). Great Bend won the games 765-484, 760-499 and 772-525 for a 689-pin advantage. Great Bend swept the Baker games 160-125, 164-114 and 198-120.
Great Bend’s girls finish the regular season with a 52-14 record and will be three points behind first-place Garden City (55-11) next week.
“It was pretty important to win all 11 points,” Keeler said. “It was a great way to end our home season.”
