GARDEN CITY — Great Bend finished third (332) and Allison Neeland placed seventh (75) in the shortened Garden City Invitational at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.
Taylor Hommertzheim (83) placed 15th, earning a medal. Halley Sanders (85) placed 19th and Kaily Griffith (89) placed 25th, overall. Four players finished in the top 25 in a 51-player field.
“After a not-so-good front nine, the girls rallied to play better on the back,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “For the 14 scored holes, we finished a respectable third of nine participating schools.”
The teeoff format was changed from shotgun to tee times to accommodate the women’s professional event being hosted this week at Buffalo Dunes. Unfortunately, due to some groups teeing off later in the day, five groups were not able to finish before dark and 14 holes were counted.
Last week, Great Bend finished ninth at Mariah Hills Golf Course. Neeland shot 94, one shot out of the medalist race.
“We struggled with the slopes and speed of the greens in both the chipping and putting aspects,” McAtee said. “We will look to build off of these two tournaments as we look ahead to next weeks tournaments in Salina and Liberal.”
