MAIZE — Great Bend’s soccer team (7-10) lost 3-2 to Maize High (8-8-1) in Tuesday’s 5A regional soccer. Joshua Rodriguez and Dani Franco scored Great Bend’s goals. The Eagles scored two second-half goals. The Panthers lost seven games by one goal.
“We played well and dominated possession for 15 to 20 minutes in one stretch,” said Great Bend coach Jesus Loera, Jr. “We turned it on too late in a close game. We had decent scoring opportunities. They scored on quick counters and we didn’t provide a defensive answer.”
Maize scored its first goal when the defense believed there might be on offside call, leaving the Panthers’ goalie with no help.
“Our sophomore defenders learned a lot this year,” Loera said.
