Hutchinson High’s swimmers won 10 events, but Great Bend vaulted by the Salthawks with superior depth to edge Hutchinson 393-369 in Tuesday’s invitational at the Barton Cougar pool.
“We didn’t win an event, but had lots of seconds, thirds and fourths,” said Great Bend coach Steven Beaumont. “Our strength is our depth. We have solid, experienced swimmers who can score for us in multiple events. That really transfers to our relays as well.”
The Panthers finished runner-up to Hutchinson in five individual events — Delaney Buehler, 50 freestyle (29.16); Camryn Dunekack 100 freestyle, (1:00.6); and 200 IM (2:36.13); Olivia Mull, 100 breaststroke (1:21.76); and Calista Long, 100 butterfly (1:16.17).
The Panthers finished runner-up in all three relays and gained additional points by placing in the relays.
* 200 free relay (1:54.71) — Aubrey Snapp, Delaney Buehler, Olivia Mull, Camryn Dunekack
* 200 medley relay (2:10.32) — Panzer, Olivia Mull, Calista Long, Camryn Dunekack
* 400 free relay (4:20.68) — Aubrey Snapp, Katherine Snapp, Piper Libeer, Calista Long
“We’ve moved most of our swimmers to different events each meet — especially our freshmen, in order to find out where they can help us the most,” Beaumont said. “Our rookies (new swimmers) are making big improvements and are starting to contribute in new events as well. It’s been exciting to see the improvements so many of our swimmers have made each meet.”
The Panthers compete April 10 at Garden City.
