OVERLAND PARK — Chance Haney got it right the second time around.
Haney, a junior from Great Bend High School, narrowly missed qualifying for the Class 5A state golf tournament as a sophomore. He came up two strokes shy during a 2012 regional at Salina Municipal Golf Course.
A year later, Haney rose up last Monday in a regional at Willow Tree in Liberal, shooting an 83 to qualify for the state tournament. The 93-player tourney field will descend upon Brookridge Golf & Fitness on Monday, located at 8223 W. 103rd St. in Overland Park, starting at 9 a.m.
“It’s exciting, but I’m a little bit nervous,” said Haney, who said he planned to play a practice round today at Brookridge. “Being my first state tournament, I’m hoping to get off to a good start and go from there with my driver.
“I feel like I’ve been consistent, and I make sure that I try to play the best that I can. I try to play smart, and I try not to take crazy shots. I’ve been playing at least 18 holes twice a week lately.”
Haney’s tee time is 9:40 on the back nine. He is paired in the same group with Colton Christenson of Topeka Seaman, Chris Cunningham of Andover and Jake Konnesky of host St. Thomas Aquinas.
