HAVEN — Larned’s Chance Sanger scored 16 points in a 71-59 Central Kansas League basketball loss to Haven Tuesday.
Thomas Harmon (14) and Trenton Fletcher (11) also scored in double figures for Larned (4-4, 0-2 CKL).
Most of Larned’s offense came from three-point shooting. The Indians converted 23 of 42 field goals and made 2 of 3 free throws. Pratt visits Larned Friday. The Indians committed 23 turnovers and played without starters Keenan Castro and Damontay Phillips.
Larned was handicapped by the absence of their two starting inside post players due to illness and other matters. That allowed Haven to have a big edge in the rebounding battle.
The two teams combined for 18 first-quarter turnovers as Haven carved out a 17-13 lead.
Behind a three-quarter-court trapping zone defense, the Wildcats frustrated the offensive flow of Larned.
“We were not patient against their press and when we’d break it, we were not patient in running our offense,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “We settled for too many 3-pointers. Fortunately, we were hitting some of them.”
Continually, Haven’s offense was able to get points in the paint with good passing as they increased their halftime lead to 39-31. A 20-8 scoring difference in the third quarter provided a 59-39 third quarter lead. Larned closed the gap to 59-50 with 4:30 remaining. But Haven converted from the free throw line and scored second-chance points with a rebounding advantage.
Haven (5-3, 2-1 CKL) was paced by Luke Wells with 23 points and five 3-pointers. Kodi Dale scored 13 pointsand Kaleb Dale nine for hot-shooting Haven which made 27 of 51 field goal attempts.
HAVEN GIRLS 62, LARNED 18 — No. 1 state-ranked 3A Haven roared past the Larned girls 62-18 in a lopsided Central Kansas League basketball game.
Katie Fischer led the Indians with nine points. Larned (1-7, 0-2 CKL) competed with mostly junior varsity players. Seven varsity players sat out for disciplinary reasons.
Behind the play of senior Emmiley Hendrixson, junior Arie Roper and sophomore Faith Paramore, the Wildcats sprinted to a 36-5 halftime advantage after an 11-0 first-quarter lead.
Haven dominated rebounding, 3-point shooting and the turnover battle as Larned committed 21.
“Obviously we were short-handed tonight,” said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. “Our girls tried hard but the difference in talent level was tremendous.”
Haven (8-0, 3-0 CKL) converted 18 of 47 field goals and 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. Roper and Paramore scored 13 points apiece and Hendrixson chipped in 10.
The Indians converted 7 of 28 field goals and 4 of 8 free throws. Halle Barker and Kendra Grandy added 3 apiece.
