HAYS – Chase Werth drove in four runs to spark the Hays Monarchs Legion baseball team to a 14-4 second-game victory over Larned Monday. The Monarchs won the opener 11-3.
MONARCHS 11, LARNED 3 — Larned trailed 5-3 when the Monarchs scored six sixth-inning runs on four hits, three walks, two errors and a hit batter off pitchers Austin Gladow and reliever Triston Burger.
Larned’s Jordan Taylor walked, moved into scoring position on Mason Perez’s single and scored on a fourth-inning error.
Layton Pleasant and Brayden Rupp started a two-run fifth inning with singles. Pleasant was out on a double-play ball. Triston Burger singled home Rupp and Burger scored on a wild pitch.
MONARCHS 14, LARNED 4 — Larned scored four fourth-inning runs. Jordan Taylor, Hunter Fitzpatrick and Shevin Martin walked. Brayden Rupp singled home Taylor. Carson Smith’s bases-loaded walk forced home Fitzpatrick. Martin scored on a wild pitch. Jon Herter’s sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Layton Pleasant.
Larned’s pitchers yielded nine walks and hit three batters to hand the Monarchs 12 baserunners.
