Hoisington Cardinal Wrestlers win Regional Tournament

The Hoisington Cardinal Wrestling Team dominated the Regional Tournament held this past Friday and Saturday at Russell. On the first day of competition the team got on a roll and advanced 11 out of their 14 wrestlers into the semifinals on the championship side of the bracket. The team than went on to win 8 of the semifinal matches to secure an insurmountable lead at the conclusion of the first day of competition. The second day went much the same as the first day. The Cardinals advanced all six of their non-championship finalists into the consolation finals.
The team, for the first time all tournament long, experienced the agony of defeat as four Cardinals lost in the round, and had their seasons come to an end. Most notable of the group was senior Landon Harmon who had been having a sensational season with a 33-10 record, and junior Kody Lang who had won over 20 matches on the year. Both wrestlers lost to opponents they had beaten prior to regional tournament to make the loss even tougher.
The team did advance two wrestlers into the Consolation Finals, to send a total of ten wrestlers on to the State Tournament next weekend in Hays. When the tournament had concluded the team was able to have won five Championships, three second places, one third and one fourth. All 14 Cardinal Wrestlers scored in the tournament. The team scored an amazing 221.5 points to outdistance second place Lyons by almost a 100 points as the Lyons scored 123.5 points.
As if the dominating victory was not enough for the Cardinals, at the end of the tournament senior Brandon Ball was awarded the Regional’s Outstanding Wrestler Award, and Coach Daniel Schmidt was named Regional Coach of the Year.
A breakdown of the results for the Cardinal Wrestlers: First place, senior Brandon Ball 138; sophomore, Jonathan Ball 145; freshman Christopher Ball 152; sophomore Hunter Hanzlick 170; sophomore Landen Urban 285; second place freshman Tanner Cassity 113; junior Austin McHenry 182; senior Chance Boor 195; third place sophomore Justin Bradley 220; and fourth place freshman Sean Urban 160.

Coach Schmidt’s Comments:
“We had a great Regional Tournament, but we will really miss the kids who did not get through to the State Tournament. It will be extremely tough to not have Senior Captain and two time State Qualifier Landon Harmon participating at state. He has been a tremendous leader for our team. He has assured me that he will still be in the room giving it his best to help those that are advancing to state all the support that he can. The 221.5 points scored by the team is a Hoisington record for most points scored by the team in any tournament in the school’s history. We know the state tournament will be a real dog fight. There are at least five teams that can win the tournament. We know that we are one of those teams. We will have to fight for every point, and wrestle better than we did this past weekend to win the class 1-3A State Tournament.”
