HOISINGTON— The Hoisington Cardinal softball team struggled to a 1-5 start this year. This past Friday, the Cardinals were able to turn it around at home. After two come-from-behind wins over the defending Class 4A Division II State Champions from Pratt, the Cardinals moved their record to 3-5.
Trailing 7-2 after six and a half innings in game one, the Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the 7th. Marisa Jonas had a solo home run followed by an error and two walks which loaded the bases. A RBI single by Shae Bitter followed by a walk by Karisa Schremmer scored another run. Kaycee Steiner hit a bases-clearing double to end the game 8-7.
In game two, Pratt scored first with one run in the third inning but was answered by a run in the bottom half when Steiner singled and stole second base. She then scored on a Jonas single. Pratt scored two more in the fourth inning but the Cardinals scored five runs in the sixth with RBI from Reagan Phelan, Chelsey Bieberle, Passion Martinez and two from Karisa Schremmer. The Cardinals put Pratt down in order in the seventh inning to end the game 6-3.
The Cardinals started their season on the road losing two games to Haven 7-5 and 14-0. Hoisington split a doubleheader with Halstead in the Cardinals home opener winning game one by a score of 4-3. Hoisington then fell 12-9 to finish the twin bill. Next, the Cardinals traveled to Hillsboro and lost both games 10-0 and 5-3.
Next action for the Cardinals is Tuesday at home against Larned before hitting the road to face Nickerson on Friday.
