EMPORIA — The Hoisington High School girls’ golf team captured second place at the Class 3-1A state meet on Monday.
The Lady Cardinals shot a 408, which surprised head coach Bruce Cooper.
“It was way above expectations,” Bruce Cooper said. “We entered the meet ranked fourth or fifth, and I told my wife that I thought we’d finish between fifth and seventh and I’d be happy. That 408 was the lowest round we’ve had all season.”
Ashton Nickelson led the Lady Cardinals with a 49-49—98, taking eighth place.
“She teed off before the winds started,” Bruce Cooper said. “She got around and done ahead of the winds. She tied for eighth and won the playoff in one hole.”
Senior Blakelee Cooper finished with 51-48—99 leaving her tied with four other golfers for 10th place.
“Blakelee struggled in the wind,” Bruce Cooper said of his daughter. “She had some big numbers early, but she recovered to finish tied in 10th. She won her playoffs in two holes.”
The golfer that really surprised Bruce Cooper was Hannah Wilborn, who shot a 56-54—110.
“We had a little sophomore that just flabbergasted me,” Bruce Cooper said. “She hit her personal best at state. She got us second place.”
Senior Shelby Littrell finished with her career best as well, finishing with a 49-52—101 to take 16th place and a medal.

Seeman medals for
Lady Indians golf team
TOPEKA — Larned finished in ninth place at the 4A golf meet.
Larned combined for a 459.
“They did compete pretty well,” Larned head coach Toni Novotny said. “There were a couple of high scores we didn’t expect. Some girls ran into tree troubles. It was a difficult course.”
The Lady Indians were led by Katie Seeman, who medaled at state for her first time by taking 11th place by shooting a 50-44—94.
“She was very excited,” Novotny said of the three-time state competitor. “She tied for ninth place and had to play an extra hole in a playoff. She was a little disappointed that she lost the playoff, but we told her that there were 93 other participants and she was 11th out of that. I think she felt good about that.”
