LARNED — The Hoisington High School girls’ basketball team beat Otis-Bison 40-30 in a semifinal game of the Keady Basketball Classic on Friday night.
The Lady Cardinals jumped ahead to a 21-4 lead after the first half.
“I thought the first quarter and halfway through the second quarter, we played really well,” Hoisington head coach Mandy Mason said. “I thought that defensively, we were getting into some trouble. We got some traps. We got some steals. They were in a zone and we executed our offense really well, and when they switched to zone, we struggled executing our offense.”
The Lady Cougars outscored Hoisington 26-19 in the second half, but the Lady Cardinals were able to hold on for the win.
“I don’t know what happened in the first half,” Otis-Bison head coach Richard Schmidt said. “We just didn’t have any intensity. We couldn’t get a shot to fall in. I think if we could have gotten a couple of baskets just to get something rolling, it would’ve helped a lot, but we just couldn’t get anything. We missed our free throws.
“I thought we were slow. We weren’t getting after it. I don’t know if we were psyched out or what, but it’s a mental case to me.”
Hoisington’s 5-foot-11 post player, Mallory Flagor, led her team with 11 points, and Savannah Rose, a 5-11 senior forward, added 10 points.
“I thought Mallory and Savannah were pretty active for us inside,” Mason said. “I thought Otis had a hard time handling those two. They just work real well together, and they just hit the boards real hard.”
Belle Brickley, who has stepped in at point guard since starting point guard Jordin Greer broke her finger in the season opener against Central Plains, scored nine points.
Jannel Tammen led Otis-Bison with nine points.
“For her size, she does awfully well,” Schmidt said of Tammen. “You know, she’s not very tall, 5-7 or 5-8, and she’s going up against 5-11 girls its hard. She’s getting better at faking and driving or faking and passing it out, but we need to get better at our outside shots. We need to make a few outside shots.”
