Fighting the rain and cold weather, the Larned High School girls’ track and field team took second place at the Barton Community College High School Track and Field Invitational on Friday evening.
The Lady Indians recorded 113 points, and Phillipsburg finished first with 150.
“I think we did well,” Larned head coach Joy Schmidt said. “You know, we really didn’t bring a whole lot of girls with us. We brought 12 girls with us and got second overall. We’ve got some girls who are placing big.
“Over the next couple of years, we’re going to have the numbers to get those fourth, fifth and sixth places to goose us up to winning the meet.”
Central Plains took third place and St. John-Hudson seized fifth in the girls’ competition.
The Tigers took fourth place, and St. John and Central Plains tied for fifth place in the boys’ competition.
“They did fair,” Central Plains head coach Britney Tenbrink said her teams. “They did OK. I think with the weather conditions we’ve had all season long, I think the kids are performing as well as they can. We haven’t had the right conditions to really have too many practices.”
Larned’s Tahje Ochs took first place in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 13.22 seconds.
Ochs also won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, five inches and the long jump (15-9 1/2).
“Tahje’s looking good,” Schmidt said. “She PR’d for this year in the triple jump. She’s consistently winning the 100 (dash). It’s not the time we want, but with the weather, it’s alright.”
Central Plains’ Maddie Demel won the discus (102-5).
Zach Wilson won the 800 run (2:08.81) for the Indians, and Gabe Warrick won the 3,200 run (11:49.16).
