How did the Great Bend High School Lady Panthers’ softball team respond to adversity? After all, they were swept by powerhouse Maize last Friday afternoon at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
By coming out and playing some vintage Lady Panthers softball — getting strong pitching and strong hitting.
Pounding out 23 hits during a doubleheader sweep, GBHS exorcised the Dodge City Red Demons on Tuesday afternoon at the Sports Complex, winning 12-0 and 12-2. The 10-run rule went into effect after 4½ innings in both games.
“The girls really went to the plate looking to move the runners,” Great Bend head coach Carrie Minton said. “It was nice to see when we hit the ball hard when we had runners in scoring position.”
Third baseman Stephanie Morrison led the hit parade, going 6-for-7 at the plate, including 3-for-3 in the nightcap, where the Lady Panthers totaled 13 hits.
Elizabeth Barber, Dakota Sanders, Hannah Mauler, Samantha Dreiling and Kelsie Doll each had doubles in game two.
In the first game, Morrison was 3-for-4, and McKenna Mauler was 1 for 3 with three runs batted in. Kelsie Doll’s double was the Lady Panthers’ only other extra-base hit.
Tarynn Stueder, Bonny Boultinghouse, Kelsie Doll and Sanders had base hits in the opener.
Pitcher Braylin Bretz fired a three-hit shutout in the opener, and Hunter Middleton allowed only a Riley Lopp squib single down the third-base line for Dodge’s only hit in the nightcap.
