TONGANOXIE — Great Bend High School’s volleyball team went 4-0 in pool play to advance to a semifinal match at the Tonganoxie Tournament on Saturday.
After a two-game win over Gardener-Edgerton, the Lady Panthers faced Class 6A No. 3-ranked Olathe South.
Great Bend fell short, losing 25-20 and 25-22 against the Lady Falcons for second place.
“A big goal for the girls was to get to the championship match, which was a first in Great Bend history at this tournament,” Lady Panthers head coach Kelsey Perry said. “Five years ago, we placed third, but never have the Lady Panthers made it to the championship.
“It was a great day for our team.”
Olathe South was a tall order for Great Bend.
“We knew this was going to be a tough match, and we couldn’t let them pull away at all if we wanted to have a chance to win in the end,” Perry said. “The first set we let them get a jump on us and couldn’t recover. We just couldn’t get past their 6-foot front line.
“The second set we played a lot better. Our hitters mixed it up more and we started to get blocks which helped keep us close.”
Brenna Haines had 34 kills in the tournament.
Kelsie Doll finished with a team-leading 55 digs.
The Lady Panthers play host to the Great Bend Invitational on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
