VALLEY CENTER — The Great Bend High School girls’ tennis team qualified three entries for the Class 5A state tournament, fighting the elements to finish tied for first place at its regional on Saturday evening.
Maize South claimed the regional title, winning the tiebreaker.
“The girls played really well in this weather,” GBHS head coach Shannon Schartz said. “It came down to the last match of the day with Macy Moyers beating Maize South for third place. We tied with them, but their win percentage is just a little bit better than ours, so they took home the title trophy.”
No. 1 singles player Morgan Francis and No. 1 doubles team Brianna Schartz and Jami McVay each finished second.
No. 2 singles player Moyers finished third to qualify for the state competition, which will be held in Topeka on Friday and Saturday.
No. 2 doubles team Stephanie Langer and Paola Ramirez won their first-round match, but fell to Schartz and McVay in the second round, and Maize South in the third.
