HUTCHINSON — Tied with Garden City High School with one event to go at the Hutchinson swim meet, the Great Bend Lady Panthers took second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish second at the meet.
Great Bend finished with 352 points on Thursday. Western Athletic Conference foe Garden City recorded 362.
“Garden is just solid on their freestyle relays,” Great Bend head coach Steve Beaumont said. “At Salina last week, their ‘A’ and ‘B’ relays beat us on the 200 and the 400 free relay. We tweaked some things on some relays today to try to maximize our points.
“I’m pleased. I think we showed that we still have a chance here in three weeks when we have the WAC meet.”
Allison Damm, Kylee Spray, Maddie Vesta and Hannah Hildebrand touched in at 4:15.67 in the 400 freestyle relay, trailing Garden City by 3.18 seconds.
The Lady Panthers did win the 200 medley relay, with Michaela Cape, Brianna Schartz, Vesta and Sylvia Ofoma combining for a time of 2:09.93.
Damm captured first place in the 200 freestyle (2:16.50) and the 500 freestyle (6:10.35).
Hildebrand won the 100 freestyle (1:00.90). She also took second place in the 200 individual medley (2:25.75).
“Hildebrand’s 200 I.M. time was the second fastest in school history,” Beaumont said. “Jessica Brozek has the school record around 2:14. She set it in 2003 I think.
“(Hildebrand) knocked about seven seconds off her entry time.”
Cape finished in first place in the 100 backstroke (1:10.73).
Great Bend returns to Hutchinson for another meet on Tuesday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
