Just four days after their last home swim meet, the Great Bend High School Lady Panthers finished first out of five teams on Monday at Kirkman Activity Center.
GBHS finished with 435 points, beating second-place Hutchinson, which finished with 324.
“I was less concerned about the quick turnaround and more concerned about it being a Monday more than anything,” GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said, “a Monday after a holiday. That doesn’t lend itself to kids being ready to swim, but I think we accomplished our goals.”
First on the coach’s mind is time improvements, which Beaumont said he saw plenty of.
“We had quite a few time improvements,” Beaumont said. “There were some places where we didn’t, but all-in-all, I think we did. We had some good time improvements on several events, and I thought our relays, specially our ‘A’ and ‘B’ relays, are really coming together.”
He also mentioned improvements in the Lady Panthers’ conditioning.
“I thought at the end of the meet, we were still swimming hard,” Beaumont said. “Our conditioning is starting to improve. The last couple of weeks, we’d see a little drop off toward the end of the meet, but it’s getting better.”
Great Bend senior Allison Damm finished first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of two minutes, 16.19 seconds. She also won the 500 freestyle (6:15.72).
Michaela Cape led the pack in the 100 backstroke (1:11.27).
Hannah Hildebrand captured first in the 50 freestyle (27.36) and the 100 freestyle (59.71).
“All three of them are swimming some good times,” Beaumont said. “Hannah wanted to break a minute on her 100 free today, and she was able to do that. That’s her best 100 free to date. She’s going to go faster at the end of the season.
“Same with Michaela on her backstroke, and with Allison on both of her distance freestyle events. Considering where we’re at, they’re going to be cutting off more time at the end of the season.”
Great Bend travels to Garden City on Tuesday, April 9. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
