SALINA — The Great Bend High School girls’ swim team made a splash during their first meet of the season.
The Lady Panthers took first place against Salina Central, and second against Salina South on Thursday night.
“It was a good meet for us,” Great Bend head coach Steve Beaumont said. “For our first meet, we saw some positive things.
“We’re nowhere near being in our best condition, but considering that, we had some good times.”
Both Salina schools have the same head coach. When one school hosts a meet with the other in attendance, the two schools don’t compete against one another.
Against Salina Central, Great Bend scored 601 points, and it totaled 581 points against Salina South.
Great Bend’s 200-meter medley relay — Michaela Cape, Brianna Schartz, Hannah Hildebrand and Sylvia Ofoma — took first place in a time of 2:07.28.
Hildebrand also captured first in the 100 butterfly at 1:06.46, and second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.30).
Allison Damm finished the 500 freestyle in first place, clocking in at 6:11.00.
All four were Class 5-1A state-qualifying times.
Schartz took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching in at 1:22.36.
“(The veterans) swam well, and that was kind of expected,” said Beaumont, who took over as head coach this season. “We also had some young girls score some points for us.
“I’m still learning the strengths of some of the girls. We have some solid swimmers, which is nice because it gives me some options to try different things with relays and events.”
The Lady Panthers are back in the pool on Thursday, March 28, when they host Hays, Thomas More Prep Marian and Haysville Campus at Kirkman Activity Center. It starts at 3:30 p.m.
