Lady Panthers split twinbill at Garden City

GARDEN CITY — The Great Bend High School softball team dropped hits all over the place in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Western Athletic Conference foe Garden City on Thursday.
The Lady Panthers totaled 22 hits in a 16-1 run-rule victory in five innings, but fell 5-4 in Game 2.
“The conditions were rough,” Great Bend head coach Carrie Minton said. “It was really windy, but we hit the ball well in Game 1. We were aggressive on the bases and aggressive at the plate.
“In the second game, we didn’t execute as well as we’d like to.”
Great Bend moves to 7-3 overall, 3-1 in WAC action.
Hunter Middleton snagged the win in the first game, striking out eight batters and walking one for the Lady Panthers. She also came in with one out in the seventh inning of Game 2, recording the loss after a fielding error allowed the Lady Buffaloes to score the go-ahead run to end the game.
Braylin Bretz started Game 2 for Great Bend.
“That was a tough loss,” Minton said. “We’d been on top for most of that game, and three of their five runs were scored on solo home runs, so we were giving up big hits that hurt us.”
In the first game, the Lady Panthers had all nine batters with multiple hits.
Kelsie Doll went 2-for-3 with a double and a one-run home run.
Samantha Dreiling hit a three-run blast for Great Bend.
Kaylie Doll went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Great Bend hosts Liberal on Saturday at the Barton Community College softball field. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
