It wasn’t always easy, but the Great Bend High School volleyball team went 6-0 at the Great Bend Invitational on Saturday at the Panther Fieldhouse.
The tournament, which originally was in a pool play and bracket format, turned into a round robin after Wichita-Word of Life backed out, leaving the invite with seven teams.
“It was a long day,” Great Bend head coach Kelsey Perry said. “We ended up having to change everything to go round robin. That really changes your mindset. To come out and win our first three matches, that was huge.
“We knew we’d have to play Phillipsburg and Hutchinson to finish, which are very good teams.”
Great Bend, which improves to 21-5 on the season, beat Hays, St. John-Hudson, Wichita West and Phillipsburg in two games.
“Our girls played hard,” Perry said. “We didn’t play the best volleyball that we can play, but our girls are scrappy and they got it done.”
Salina Central took the Lady Panthers to three games, but Great Bend won 24-26, 25-16 and 25-23.
Hutchinson also won the first game against Great Bend, but the Lady Panthers managed to turn it around for a 13-25, 25-19 and 25-18 win.
“Salina Central, they jumped out on us,” Perry said. “We just caught them in kind of a lull in that second game, turned the momentum over.
“Hutch was the same way. Hutch jumped out big. We knew we had already taken first place, but we had to prove it. Our girls did that.”
Brenna Haines had 30 kills in the invite to lead the Lady Panthers.
Tarynn Stueder finished with 115 assists on the day.
St. John finished sixth, going 2-4 on the day with wins over Wichita West and Phillipsburg.
The Lady Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Goddard-Eisenhower for a triangular with Wichita Campus, starting at 5 p.m.
