Larned Indians clr NEW

LARNED — The ninth-ranked 4A Division II Larned girls improved their record to 9-7 here Tuesday evening as they eased by the Hoisington Cardinals 38-31, in a Central Kansas League game.
Larned jumped out to a 13-3 first-quarter lead behind the defensive efforts of Ivory Muldrow. She totaled five steals in the first quarter and those steals were converted to points. Hoisington would settle down in the second stanza but Larned still held a 21-14 halftime edge. The two teams battled through the third quarter on even terms, ending with Larned still leading 28-22.
Hoisington, behind Emma Harmon and Katherine Warnken, kept the pressure on Larned as they converted 12 of 17 free throws. Warnken hit three big 3-point baskets. Larned struggled from the free throw line as they attempted to put some distance between themselves and the Cardinals as the fourth quarter ticked down.
Larned coach Ashley Crosby said, “We missed too many free throws but , overall, I was pleased with our effort. The girls are running our offense well and finding their shots. We did a pretty good job of taking care of the ball tonight with only 16 turnovers.”
Emma Harmon led the Cardinals with 15 points while Warnken chipped in with her three long baskets and 9 points. The Cardinals evened their season record at 8-8. Hoisington will entertain Halstead Friday.

LARNED — The Hoisington boys erased a 9-point Larned lead in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter here Tuesday evening, forcing a 66-66 deadlock and overtime. In overtime the Cardinals did all of the scoring, blanking the Indians 7-0 for a 73-66 comeback victory in a Central Kansas League game.
Larned jumped out to a 15-10 first-quarter lead on the effort of 6’2” post player Jonathan Herter’s 8 points. Hoisington played catch up in the second quarter and supported by Cameron Davis’ tip in at the buzzer , pulled to within 24-22 at halftime.
It was a bruising, tough basketball game featured by runs and spurts by both teams. The Cardinals’ last spurt, 7 points in overtime, proved the difference. Early in the fourth quarter Larned went on a 11-3 run to take control of the game, a led they maintained until the fatal last two minutes when Hoisington’s catch up efforts proved successful.
Larned had pulled into a 66-64 lead with 29 seconds remaining and the Cardinals were having trouble getting into their offense but Brenner Donovan got loose along the base line with 15 seconds remaining to tie the game at 66. The Indians got what they wanted in the remaining seconds as Jonathan Herter drove down the lane only to leave his layup just short as time expired and with it, Larned’s chances for an upset victory evaporated.
Hoisington was led in scoring by the dynamic duo of Brenner Donovan with 25 and Grant Dolechek with 24. Cameron Davis added 12. The Cardinals were 20 of 34 from the free throw line ass they improved to 7-9 with this Central Kansas League victory.
