Larned to meet Vikings for state berth

HOISINGTON -- The Larned Indians rolld past rival Hoisington-Central Plains 15-8 to qualify for the 4A softball championship game. The Larned-Smoky Valley winner qualifiesd for the 4A Division 2 state softball tournament at Salina.

Smoky Valley (12-9) earned two forfeit wins from Larned (11-10) during the regular season.

LARNED 15, HOISINGTON 8 — Larned’s Nikki Taylor enjoyed a career day with six RBIs with a trio of two-run base hits. Taylor singled home Mattie Glover and Julie Tapia in the first inning. She doubled home Shaylee Martin and Abby Towery in the third inning. Taylor singled home Tapia and Towery in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals’ defense contributed with two first-inning errors and a trio of fourth-inning errors that led to eight unearned runs. Tapia scored four runs without a base hit.
SMOKY VALLEY 15, NICKERSON 0 — The Smoky Valley Vikings coasted past the Nickerson Panthers 15-0 in Monday’s regional softball game. Megan Sample drove home five runs. Jordan Otto doubled twice.
Pitcher Megan Sample and Lauren Barnes combined for a three-inning no-hitter. Lana Clark and Sample delivered two-run hits in an eight-run first inning. Sample hit another two-run single in a five-run second inning.
The Panthers had one chance to score. But Viking catcher Megan Hulse picked off baserunner Skylar Eidson at third base in the second inning. The Panthers finished 0-21 for the second consecutive season.
