ABILENE — Larned’s singles player Dalton Penka (22-9) won three of three matches to place fifth for the 4A state tennis tournament at Thursday’s Abilene regional. Penka defeated Smoky Valley’s Laurence Dahlsten 6-3, 6-4 Friday for fifth place. Penka will compete at 4A state May 11-12 at Winfield.
Penka defeated Eli Booth of Hays, 6-0, 6-1 before losing 6-1, 6-0 to McPherson’s regional runner-up Andrew Snell. Penka earned his bid to 4A state with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marysville’s Dalton Denner.
Larned’s Trevor Coulson (9-14) lost 9-1 to Hays High’s Drew Morley. 
The Larned’s doubles team of Andrew Bright and Logan DeMond (19-10) won one match, but lost twice. Bright and DeMond defeated Marysville’s Gabe Capp-Jaydon Ballman, 6-2, 6-2. State qualifiers Matt Lucas-Jake Lucas of Smoky Valley downed Bright-DeMond, 6-1, 6-0. Hays High’s Logan Clark-Zac Wyse defeated Larned 6-1, 6-2. 
McPherson’s Jarrod Nowak (30-3) won the singles division and McPherson’s Nolan Schrader-Kaden Stewart (33-1) won the doubles division. Schrader and Stewart are the defending 4A doubles champions.
