McKenna Mauler led the Great Bend High School girls’ golf team, shooting a 52 at the Lady Panthers Invitational on Tuesday.
The invite, which featured all five Western Athletic Conference teams, was a Great Bend Invite that will be counted toward each team’s WAC finish.
“It’s a round robin,” GBHS head coach Troy Stein said. “Each WAC team hosts a meet, and the whole thing is tallied at the end of the season.”
GBHS combined for a score of 249 to tie with Liberal.
To break the tie, each team’s fifth player is added to the score. Because Great Bend only has four players, it took fifth place.
“We played alright,” Stein said. “We didn’t have our best scores of the season, but I think we get a little nervous playing at home.”
Stein said that Mauler ran into a little trouble on a couple of holes, which kept her just two strokes from breaking into the top 10 finishers.
“She was just a couple of strokes over her season average, I think,” Stein said. “She had two holes that hurt her a little bit.”
Maddie Werth shot a 59, Michaela Cape finished with 62 strokes and Sam Dreiling finished with a 76.
Stein said that he is trying to prepare his team for regional play, which will be on Monday.
“We’re just working on being consistent,” Stein said. “They can all hit good shots. It’s just working to string those together. We’re working on chipping and putting, as well.”
