WICHITA — Great Bend High School senior Hannah Middleton finished her high school career with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault.
Middleton cleared 10-0, as did teammate Selam Ball, who finished sixth on Friday evening at the Class 6-1A state track and field championships.
“I was really happy with what I did,” Middleton said. “I kept getting better every year, which was the main thing I wanted to do.”
It wasn’t the finish she was looking for, though.
“I was hoping for second or third, but I’m happy with fourth place, definitely,” Middleton said.
She was able to outperform her regional finish. Middleton cleared 9-6 to be the sixth seed at the state meet.
Middleton cleared 10-0 on her second attempt.
Ball, a junior was able to match her regional vault of 10-0. She was the third seed going in.
Mill Valley’s Emily Brigham set a 5A state meet record with a vault of 12-8. The previous record of 12-0 was set in 2010.
“They both competed very well,” GBHS head coach Bo Black said. “They both cleared 10-0, so you can’t argue with that.
