McPHERSON — Great Bend High School’s Macy Moyers and Morgan Francis combined for a first-place finish in the doubles tennis competition on Saturday at the McPherson Invitational.
The Lady Panthers, which were down a player, finished sixth with 45 points. McPherson won the invite with 77.
“We had a great day,” GBHS head coach Shannon Schartz said. “We played very well. We had a singles player who is a junior varsity girl that had to play singles for us today. Everyone else had other commitments. She’s a freshman, and she played very well for us.
“Our doubles teams played outstanding.”
Moyers and Francis went 4-0 on the day.
Doubles team Jami McVay and Brianna Schartz combined for a 3-1 outing, losing to Newton in a quarterfinal match. They finished in fifth place.
“Our doubles team played phenomenal,” Shannon Schartz said. “It was probably some of the best doubles play that we’ve had all season. We had a chance with Newton. We were up 5-0, and we let it slip away. We could’ve had an all-Great Bend finals.
“Everyone was serving well. We had some of the best net play I’ve seen all year.”
Addison Westhoff filled in as Great Bend’s lone singles player.
The freshman finished 0-4.
“She did very well for her first time on varsity,” Shannon Schartz said. “She’s a freshman who has played on the JV all season, but she held her own. It was a mixed competition, so she was facing No. 1 singles players as well.”
The invite gives Great Bend its last tune-up before facing the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
The WAC meet will be on Monday, starting at 10 a.m.
“We’re the defending champions, and we’re hoping to repeat,” Shannon Schartz said.
