GARDEN CITY— Great Bend senior Macy Moyers finished with a perfect 3-0 record in No. 1 singles and set a new school record in the process Saturday at Garden City.
Moyers now sits atop of the all-time GBHS win list at 126 career victories which surpassed the record held by Melanie Schartz with 125. Schartz played for the Panthers from 1997 to 2000.
Moyers recorded back-to-back shutouts in 8-0 decisions against Wichita West’s Emily Baird and Emma Price of Scott City. Moyers then closed out the day with an 8-1 win against Brooke Forinash of Hays.
In No. 2 singles Addie Westhoff finished at 1-2. Westhoff opened with an 8-3 setback against Scott City’s Ximena Ayala before defeating Melissa Segovia of Ulysses in an 8-1 decision. Westhoff then fell to Jennifer Sandoval of Hays, 8-2.
Taylor Huslig and Carly Boyd placed second in No. 1 doubles as the two picked up their first two wins against Lizzete Mendoza and Rachel Hawley (Cimmaron, 8-1) and Krystal Appel and Alma Martinez (Scott City, 8-2). Huslig and Boyd then dropped an 8-1 decision to eventual doubles champions Shai Cartmill and Sally Dinkel of Garden City, 8-1.
Rebecca Dawson and Rachel Carpenter won one out of three matches in No. 2 doubles and started the day with an 8-4 victory over Garden City’s Megan Powers and Allyson Becker. The pair dropped an 8-5 tiebreaker to Skyler Childress and Marissavel Rodriguez of Dodge City before falling to Meade’s Nikki Friesen and McKenzie Harris, 8-3.
“As a team we played ok,” coach Dustin Wheeler said. “We have to improve on the little things to make a big difference in the outcomes of our matches. Macy had a great tournament not only with the wins but how she carried herself through the matches.”
On deck for the Panthers is Saturday’s McPherson Invitational.
