TOPEKA – Great Bend’s Camryn Dunekack finished as Class 5-1A state runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle, the best finish in school history at Saturday’s Class 5-1A state swimming championship. Dunekack earned first-team all-state honors.
Dunekack’s career-best time (24.48) set a Great Bend school record and finished behind Wichita Trinity’s Taylor Kostboth (24.31). She finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (54.53) behind Kostboth (53.28) and SM Miege’s Cassie Grunhard (53.4).
The Panthers scored 99 points and placed eighth. SM Miege scored 289 points to finish first and St. Thomas Aquinas finished second (234).
The Panthers’ 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.23) placed fifth with Cook, Dunekack, Sheridan Beaumont and Olivia Mull posting a season-best time.
The Panthers’ 400-free relay Cook, Dunekack, Calista Long and Katherine Snapp lost a head-to-head race for the eighth finals spot against Wichita Trinity after tying with identical times of 3:58.03. The Panthers finished with the eighth-best time (3:56.16) Saturday.
Kira Cook placed sixth in the 200 free (2:04.03) and 10th in the 500 free (5:44.65) with a career-best time.
Six of the seven Great Bend entries posted season-best times.
