MCPHERSON — Great Bend’s Kelby Titus shot a 90 to miss tying for top 15 medalist honors by one stroke Thursday at the McPherson Golf Invitational.
Titus shot nines of 43 and 47 at Turkey Creek Golf Course, with north winds gusting past 30 mph. He tied for 18th. Great Bend’s Andrew Erb tied for 32nd with a 96 (45-51).
The stiff winds made the greens dry and fast and difficult to hold shots.
“The wind was very difficult — brutal was the word of the day,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “Playing conditions were very difficult in the high winds as evidenced by the much higher scores overall. Not one of the individuals shot in the 70s. It wasn’t a surprise with the conditions and the difficulty of the course in those conditions.”
Salina Sacred Heart’s Grant Herrenbruck was medalist with an 11-over 81. Hutchinson captured the team titled with a 341 score.
The Panthers compete again April 18 at Hays, giving the team some valuable practice time.
“We will use the week to work very hard on our weaknesses,” said McAtee. “Hopefully, we show improvement in the next tournament on the 18th in Hays.”

SALINA SOUTH JV — Payton Doll shot 105 to tie for 33rd and Jared Divis and Michael Harbaugh tied for 35th with 107s at the Salina South junior varsity tournament Thursday.
“This was many of our guys’ first 18-hole events,” McAtee said. “Again, it was a very tough day with very high winds. Overall, we’re pleased with the progress of our first-year players. Payton Doll, once again, had the best individual score of our squad, followed closely by Jared Divis and Michael Harbaugh.”
The Panthers will enter a junior varsity tournament at Hesston Tuesday.
