WICHITA -- Great Bend's top athletes Jeffey Muiruri, LoCora Bryant and Kerby Depenbusch posted top eight finishes in the elite division at the Shocker Prestate Track Meet.
Kate Warren was Great Bend's individual winner in the Class 6-4A girls discus (116-9).
"We had a number of athletes who put in some good performances against some very tough competition," said Great Bend coach Todd Kaiser. "Overall we had a respectable meet. We still have a lot of things we need to get better at but, we still have a lot of season left to get these things corrected.
"On Thursday night, our distance crew put in some good times and placed well in their races. Kerby Depenbusch ran his season PR of 9:54.84 while placing 4th in the Elite 3200m and he also had a very good anchor split of 2:04 on our 4 by 800 relay that competed in the Elite Division.
"Armando Jaquez did a nice job running his career best time of 10:48 in the 4A-6A Division 3,200m, Kaiser said. "In the 1,600m, Karen Razo placed third in a time of 5:39.6 in the 4A-6A Division race. She has been very consistent in the 1600 this season. Eric Vazquez and Quinton Elliott both ran well in the 4A-6A Division 1600, both of them running season PRs.
Hurdler Jeffery Muiruri led Friday's effort in the elite division.
"Jeffery Muiruri had an outstanding day," Kaiser said. "He was in the Elite Division in both of his hurdle races, placing 5th in a tough 110m High Hurdle race and ran a career best time of 40.50 placing 3rd in the 300m Intermediate Hurdles. He then ran an outstanding opening split on our 4 x 400 relay, which was also in the Elite Division. He’s having a great start to his season.
" LoCora Bryant also had a very good day in the 100 and 200. She also competed in the Elite Division in both of her races and had a very good split leading off our 4 x 400 relay that also ran in the Elite Division. Like Jeffery, she is off to a good start this season.
"Eric Vazquez also ran a very good 800m, competing in the 4A-6A Division race and ran a respectable opening split in on our 4 x 800 relay that competed in the Elite Division.
"In the girls’ shot and discus, Carley Brack and Kate Warren both had good days, with both of them placing in the top 10 in both of those events competing in the 4A-6A Division. They have both been very steady for us in the shot and discus early in the season."
Great Bend competes April 19 at the Great Bend junior varsity meet. The varsity competes April 22 at the Buhler meet.
