SALINA – Great Bend multi-state qualifier Camryn Dunekack qualified for 5A state swimming and the Panthers’ 400-yard relay also qualified for state in the Salina South Tournament. Great Bend placed first with 545 points and Hutchinson High (485) placed second.
Dunekack posted state-qualifying times in the 50 free (26.73) and 100 free (59.65) and anchored the 400-yard relay (4:10.57) with teammates Aubrey Snapp, Calista Long and Katherine Snapp. Long captured first place in the 100 butterfly (1:11.82).
“Our season got off to a really good start,” said Great Bend coach Steve Beaumont. “The girls performed very well even though it’s early in the season. We have so many new girls competing for the first time. It was good for them experience a swim meet and see what it is all about. We’re a long way from being in good, racing condition. But it’s always good to get our first meet out of the way.”
The Panthers’ 200 medley relay placed second (2:10.06) with Elizabeth Gerdes, Olivia Mull, Caitlin Long and Delaney Buehler competing. The 200 free relay placed second (1:55.57) with Mull, Sheridan Beaumont, Piper Libeer and Dunekack competing.
“We have a lot of new swimmers, so we will be moving them around a lot,” Beaumont said. “We’ll look to find where they will help us the most. Our new swimmers competed amazing well for their first time out. There was a lot of nerves, but we got through the day and swam really well.”
