NEWTON —Great Bend’s returning state qualifier Camryn Dunekack placed runner-up twice and the Panthers finished runner-up (271.5) to Newton (329.5) at Thursday’s Newton Swimming Invitational.
Dunekack placed second in the 50 freestyle (27.1) behind Hutchinson’s Lonna Porter (26.37) and second in the 100 freestyle (59.36) to Hesston’s Addi Schroeder. Dunekack placed second in the 50 free (24.48), third in the 100 free (54.53) at state last year.
The Panthers’ best relay finish was a third-place in the 200 medley relay (2:12.75) with Calista Long, Olivia Mull, Delaney Buehler and Gentry Schneider competing.
“We had a few individuals make nice time improvements,” said Great Bend coach Steve Beaumont. “This is always a tough meet with very good swimmers from the Wichita area. To finish second was a bit of a surprise. We didn’t perform as well as we did last Friday at our home invite.”
The Panthers will seek their 16th consecutive Western Athletic Conference swim title Thursday at Garden City.
“We know we have a target on our backs — and that is fine,” Beaumont said. “We expect to get everyone’s best shot. We just need to focus on the things we control — effort and attitude. Our focus is on getting a few kids healthy and preparing to swim our best at the WAC meet Thursday.”
