DOUGLASS — Great Bend’s Cody Liles (132) and Keaton Sander (138) captured first place at the Douglass Wrestling Tournament Saturday. Three-time state qualifier Liles (8-0) beat Wichita South’s Dalton Powell 1-0 in the finals after a 4-3 semifinal decision over Augusta’s Josh Moore. Liles is ranked fourth in Class 5A.
No. 4 state-ranked Sander (8-0) posted three pins, including a championship pin in 1:32 over Pratt’s Dalton Prosser. Panther No. 4 ranked Christian Rivas placed second with a 8-2 loss in the finals against Pratt’s Logan Baird. Sander has pinned seven of eight opponents.
Also placing were third-place finisher Keegan Bowman, (182); and fourth-place finisher Eric Vasquez (120). The Panthers competed without four veterans for various reasons.
“I was very happy with how our varsity performed at Douglass because we had five individuals place and placed fifth out of 12 teams,” said Great Bend coach Justin Broeckelman. “Overall, both squads made much improvement over the first week of competition. Eric Vazquez made his debut and brought home fourth. Eric lost twice to Brayan Balderrama, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in 4A from Pratt,”
In the Great bend junior varsity meet, Josh Hamilton (160) placed second; Braulio Vargas (160) finished third; and Braxton Schooler (132) finished fourth. Newton’s Wyatt Hendrickson pinned Hamilton in 2:25 for first place.
“On the JV side, we may not have placed as many wrestlers, but our technique and heart showed great improvements,” Broeckelman said.
