WICHITA — Jayce Brack snuck in at second place in the shot put on Saturday at the Class 6-1A state track and field championships.
In 5A competition at Cessna Stadium, the Great Bend High School sophomore thrower recorded a personal-best throw of 55 feet, 1 1/4 inches. Cade Sharp of Hays become a three-time champion, winning the event at 57-3 1/2.
Third-place went to Da’Quan Blake of Leavenworth (55-1).
“You know, when you finish in that position, you wish you could win it, but I think Brack’s happy with what he got,” GBHS head coach Bo Black said. “When you’re behind a three-time state champion, you got to be happy with what got and know that you have two more years.”
Brack was a two-event placer, also securing fifth in the discus on Friday.
Panthers senior Kole Stiner, a three-event qualifier, finished seventh in the 1,600-meter run at four minutes, 36.43 seconds.
He captured fifth place in the 800 run at 2:01.40.
“I kind of died off at the end, but I can’t complain, I’m on the podium,” Stiner said after the 1,600. “I’m not really content, but I have to take it.”
Christian Graham also ran in the 1,600, taking 12th at 4:42.98.
Stiner ran a leg of the 4x800 relay, along with Chon Chavez, Cristian Garcia and Ky Heeke. The group had a time of 8:16.60, finishing ninth to just miss the podium.
Shelby Tracy found the podium with an eighth-place finish in the long jump. Her distance was 15-9.
“I think we had a really good weekend,” Black said. “To have 19 kids qualify and have that many medalists, that’s what it’s all about.”
Great Bend finished with 13 medalists, counting all four legs of the 4x800 relay team.
Anthony Valenzuela finished 13th in the triple jump (41-3 1/2) and Kaylan Lagerman finished 12th in the 800 run (2:33.97).
