Hays City Shoot-Out

HAYS — Great Bend High School’s final shot from Brock Ibarra for a chance to win was off-target on Saturday afternoon at Hays Middle School.
The Panthers basketball team fell 50-49 to Riley County in the 30th Annual Hays City Shoot-Out consolation winners’ bracket game.
Great Bend took a one-point lead with 30 seconds remaining, but Riley County was able to up the ante.
“We battled back and took a one-point lead,” GBHS head coach Chris Battin said. “We went down the other end and gave up an offensive rebound and a putback. Brock had a shot at the end, but it didn’t go in.”
It seemed like things were clicking in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers weren’t able to finish out the game.
“We got some stops on defense,” Battin said. “We had a couple big shots, some easy layups. We got back in the game, but in the end, we couldn’t do the things we needed to do to finish.”
Rebounds were an issue throughout for the Panthers, who trailed 13-8 after eight minutes.
“We didn’t play very well in the first quarter,” Battin said, “and they played very well. They beat us up on the glass pretty bad.”
Gabe Joiner led Great Bend with 11 points, making 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.
Great Bend hits the road again on Friday night to challenge Junction City.
