PARK CITY — There was no miracle finish for Great Bend’s Class 5A state runner-up Keaton Sander in the Class 5A state wrestling championship match. The four-time state qualifier placed second after previous fourth and sixth-place finishes.
Arkansas City’s top-ranked Jake Beeson (42-2) pinned No. 3-ranked Sander in 5:01 to capture the 138-pound title one day after Sander surprised the No. 2-ranked wrestler. Beeson beat Sander 5-1 in the regional final last week.
Beeson’s upper-body strength and superior balance prevented Sander from a takedown and he gained two back points before escaping for a 3-0 lead. Beeson delivered a pinning combination in the third period.
“My goal all year was to be in the finals. I did the best I could,” Sander said. “He’s real strong, a fit kid. He’s good in all positions. At the end, he caught me off my feet.”
Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman said Beeson is a legitimate state champion.
“Keaton wrestled Beeson better this week,” he said. “When he hit that ‘Fireman’s Carry,’ he caught us off balance. He’s a tough competitor with the right mindset. He’s got lots of moves in his toolbox.”
Sander won three matches Friday, including an 8-7 victory over Mill Valley’s Jarret Bendure. Sander downed KC Turner’s Tanner Sutton 8-0 in the first round. Sander edged Wichita Carroll’s Conor Murphy 3-1 in the quarterfinals in a rematch of their regional match.
“That was one of the best tournaments I’ve enjoyed all year,” Sander said. “I upset the No. 2 guy when I had to come back and get a last-second takedown. I felt good going into the week. I stayed calm and didn’t get nervous.”
The Panthers placed 11th with 53 points. Goddard defended its team title with 207.5 points followed by Arkansas City (157) and Valley Center (116).
“Keaton wrestled really well this week,” Broeckelman said. “Getting three seniors with state medals is a highlight. Eric Vazquez came back all the way back in the consolation bracket. Noah Presson placing sixth is big for a wrestler with two years of experience. Our four freshmen gained good state experience.”
Two-time state qualifier Eric Vazquez (28-17, 120) rallied with three wins in the consolation bracket and placed sixth. After Liles lost 7-2 to Logan Elbrader of St. Thomas Aquinas, he beat Lansing’s Tyler Williams, 5-0; Blue Valley Southwest’s Joe Dennison, 4-2; Andover’s Carter Guyer, 3-0. Newton’s Logan Treaster beat him 6-4 and Valley Center’s Mike Turkali won 7-4 in the fifth-place match.
Presson pinned Mill Valley’s Alec Derritt in 4:55, but was pinned in 43 seconds by Pittsburg’s two-time state champion Kayne Hutchison. Presson pinned Carroll’s Sean Hallacy (4:11) and DeSoto’s Lawson Marshall (4:52) before losing back-to-back matches to KC Schagle’s Tylen Wallace (0:33) and Kapaun-Mt. Carmel’s Nick Lowe (2:22) for fifth place.
Gage Fritz (145) and Drew Liles (106) lost second-round matches and were eliminated in wrestle-back round. Fritz defeated Mill Valley’s Joey Gray 9-7 and Eisenhower’s Carson Wheler 7-3, but he lost a hard-fought 3-2 match to Maize’s third-place finisher Duwayne Villapando and 9-7 to Liberal’s fourth-place finisher Emanuel Peralta.
Liles (30-13) lost 7-0 to fifth-place finisher Hunter Bindi of St. Thomas Aquinas and 7-4 to Shawnee Heights’ sixth-place finisher Fred Maisberger. Liles pinned St. James’ T.J. Miller in 2:44.
Carsyn Schooler (14-18, 113) lost 10-2 to No. 3 state-ranked Dawson Podlena of Topeka Seaman. Schooler beat KC Sumner’s Peyton Richardson 3-0 and KC Schlagle’s Jonan Andrew 4-2 before losing 8-2 to Shawnee Heights’ Barrett Stickelman 8-2.
George Weber (29-17, 126) finished 1-2 and Conrad Montoya (19-12, 132) finished 0-2.
