Great Bend’s shining star Kelby Titus is the finest golfer in the Western Athletic Conference outside of Garden City.
Titus tied for third-place with a 3-over-par 73 at Stoneridge Country Club in Tuesday’s rain-delayed Great Bend Invitational. Heavy weekend rain forced players to play Stoneridge back nine twice because the front nine was unplayable. Players had to negotiate a few wet spots, but were greeted by light wind and 65-degree temperatures.
“Kelby Titus had a good tournament finishing in third,” said Great bend coasch Travis McAtee. “He continues to perform well in WAC tournaments and hopes to continue good play in the fourth WAC tournament of the year at Garden City Friday.”
Garden City’s Taylor Larsen outlasted teammate Sion Audrain in a two-hole playof after they tied with even-par 70s. Garden City captured the team title (294), seven strokes ahead of rival Hays High (301).
Great Bend finished fifth (352) and counted scores by Jared Divis (89), Aaron Stein (92) and Isaac Panzer (98), who all shot personal bests for the season. Keaton Sander (104) and Cal Marshall (107) also competed.
“We had three individuals tie or set new personal bests,” McAtee said. “Jared Divis with 89, Aaron Stein with 92, and Isaac Panzer with 98. We improved our team score by 23 strokes. We hope this trend continues in the final two weeks of the season.”
