Great Bend’s Class AAA 19-and-under American Legion baseball team lost to Russell 11-1 and 11-3 in a season opening doubleheader Wednesday at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
RUSSELL 11, CHIEFS 1 — Russell’s Cade Evans hit a two-run homer and Russell scored 11 runs in the first three innings off starter Brice Kaiser.
Evans’ two-run homer capped a five-run first inning. Colton Fritchen’s double scored Chase Prestor and Brady Dinkel’s triple scored Fritschen. Tanner Rome’s sacrifice fly scored Dinkel.
Prestor drilled a two-run single and Brooks Nichols and Evans delivered RBI singles in a six-run third inning. Nichols scored on an error and Dinkel’s sacrifice fly scored Prestor.
Dalton Bender doubled home Konner Ireland for the Chiefs’ fourth-inning run. Payton Mauler, Koy Brack and Logan Perry delivered base hits.
RUSSELL 11, CHIEFS 3 — Russell scored eight fifth-inning runs on two hits, four walks and three wild pitches for an 11-3 victory. Russell drew nine walks and the Chiefs committed three errors.
Evans scored on a wild pitch, Walker Braun on an error and Austin Dale scored on a groundout in a three-run second inning.
The Chiefs’ Zach Jacobs singled home Payton Mauler and Koy Brack’s double scored Jacobs in the second inning. Jacobs’ single scored pinch runner Dalton Bieker in the third inning for a 3-3 tie.
Jacobs delivered three hits. Ireland, Logan Perry and Mauler had base hits.
Russell’s Dinkel and Rome scored on wild pitches to start an eight-run fifth inning. Braun’s single drove home Ridgley. Nichols scored on a groundball and Dale scored on an error. Prestor’s two-run single scored Evans and Braun. Prestor scored on a wild pitch.
