Great Bend’s No. 3 state-ranked Keaton Sander lost 5-1 to Arkansas City’s top-ranked wrestler Jake Beeson in the Class 5A 138-pound regional finals. Sander must sweep three matches Friday at Park City’s Hartman Arena to earn another shot at Beeson.
Four-time state qualifier Sander has placed fourth and sixth in Class 5A the past two seasons. Sander faces a likely rematch with Wichita Carroll’s Conor Murphy in the quarterfinals and a probable showdown with No. 2 state-ranked Jarrett Bendure (32-6) of Mill Valley in Friday’s semifinals.
“I’m working hard in practice,” Sander said. “I want to go after it. I want to get off of the bottom and get takedowns. I’ve got a good shot to get to the semifinals if I wrestle well.”
Beeson (38-2) also handed Sander an overtime loss two years ago.
“I’m sure that’s who I’ll see in the state finals,” Sander said. “I definitely want to get a shot at him.”
Great Bend has qualified eight wrestlers for the 5A state tournament, including two-time qualifiers Eric Vazquez (25-14, 120)and Noah Presson (17-7, 285).
“It was a tough regional, definitely tougher than the east,” said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. “Most of the regional weights were solid.”
Broeckelman said the Panthers will gain valuable state wrestling experience.
“They are on the verge of peaking and wrestling their best,” Brockelman said. “We hope to win some close matches this weekend. We’ll keep building. We have a few litle mistakes to correct.”
