ST. JOHN  BOYS 58, CALDWELL 29

NORWICH – St. John’s Tanner Halling scored 23 points and Chase Fisher contributed 16 points as the Tigers’ big men dominated the paint in a 58-29 substate championship victory over Caldwell in the 1A Norwich substate.

St. John (18-5) qualified for state at Hays for the 11th time. The Tigers have captured six state basketball titles. The Tigers are 28-2 over the past six postseasons.

Caldwell converted two 2-pointers and seven 3-pointers. Halling and Fisher blocked and altered shots.

St. John coach Clint Kinnamon made the trip to Manhattan to see Kansas State beat Baylor. St. John’s Kade Kinnamon, Clint’s son, and St. John’s Dean Wade dominated the ballgame.

“Tanner and Chase blocked shots and altered a ton of shots,” said St. John coach Clint Kinnamon. “I don’t remember a team making two 2-pointers in a game. We guarded pretty well tonight.”

ST. JOHN GIRLS 45, CALDWELL 35  -- St. John’s Tara Nelson scored 22 points to spark the Tigers past Caldwell 45-35 in Saturday’s 1A Norwich substate championship.

Nelson scored 16 first-quarter points and 19  by halftime. Torre Fisher scored 17 points.

“They played in back of Tara and we took advantage and got her the basketball,” said St. John coach Danny Smith. “The girls did a great job getting her the basketball. They’ve played beyond their potential all year.”

The Tigers (17-6) have qualified for 11 state trips and own one state title.
