GREENSBURG — No. 1 ranked Class 2A St. John outscored Kiowa County 42-22 after halftime for a 65-44 victory in the Class 2A Greensburg basketball substate.
St. John (21-1) will meet old rival Central Plains (17-5) in Saturday’s substate championship for the third time in the past four years. St. John has won nine of the past 12 meetings with the Oilers. St. John also beat the Oilers 49-44 for the Class 2A state title in 2015.
Point guard Cole Kinnamon led the Tigers with 17 points, three steals and three assists. Alexis Valenzuela (11) and Jorge Calleros (11) scored in double figures. The Tigers made 25 free throws.
Henry Cuevas led the Mavericks with 21 points.
