Great Bend High School’s varsity tennis team, behind No. 1 singles player Morgan Francis’ first-place finish, captured the top spot in GBHS Round Robin Tennis Tournament on Tuesday at Veterans Park.
Great Bend finished with 23 points to nudge second-place Larned, which finished with 19. Hays took third place with 18 points, followed by Sterling.
Francis had her stiffest competition from Larned’s Jessi Johnson. The two players went back and forth throughout their match with Francis coming out on top in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-4).
“She showed a lot of power and showed a good consistency,” Great Bend head coach Shannon Schartz said of Francis, a freshman, who captured the No. 1 singles spot in the preseason.
With 2-1 records, Great Bend secured second-place finishes in the other three divisions to nail down the top spot.
“I thought our No. 2 doubles team played well,” Schartz said of Becca Brining and Kinzie Sinclair.
“Those were bonus points for us in the team standings, which is always a plus.”
The Great Bend Invitational will take place Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
The guests include Dodge City, Ellinwood, Garden City, Liberal, Nickerson and WaKeeney.
