Top-ranked St. John hosts sub-state competition

The St. John High School volleyball team will host a Class 1A Division-I sub-state tournament on Saturday afternoon.
“I think the girls are very excited about playing at home,” St. John head coach Trish Wade said. “It is a definite plus. It hopefully gets more of our fan base at the matches, and we get to show off our new bleachers and nets.
“We’ve been on the road a lot this season. We’ve only had two home matches.”
The Lady Tigers, 35-2, are ranked No. 1 in the latest Kansas Volleyball Association poll.
Macksville, which is 7-23 overall, will open the tournament against Ashland at 2.
St. John receives a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, and will face the winner of the Ashland-Macksville match.
The No. 2 seed is No. 2-ranked South Central (28-6).
 
No. 1-ranked Lady Cards are top seed in 3A
Hoisington, which is ranked No. 1 in 3A, has a No. 1 seed at the Lyons sub-state tournament on Saturday.
Hoisington (34-3) takes on No. 8-seeded Lyons (3-27) in the first round. The match begins at 2 p.m.
“We happen to have the athletes right now that can put it all together,” Hoisington head coach Tina Johnson said. “If the girls go in to Saturday doing what they have done all year, they should be able to be very successful. This is just another week of doing what we do, getting ready to play.”
Senior Mallory Flagor leads the Lady Cardinals with 546 kills on the season. She also leads in aces (76) and solo blocks (106).
Flagor was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Kansas Player of the Week by MaxPreps.com.
Junior Mykela Riedl leads Hoisington defensively with 278 digs.
Sophomore setter Abi Rziha leads with 766 assists.
 
Ellinwood hosts 2A
sub-state tournament

Central Plains squares off against host Ellinwood at the 2A sub-state tournament on Saturday.
The Oilers (24-13) is the No. 3 seed.
Ellinwood, the No. 6 seed, is 15-20.
The No. 1 seed is Pratt-Skyline (26-9). It will face the winner of a play-in match between No. 9-seeded Medicine Lodge and No. 8-seeded Canton-Galva, which starts at 1 p.m.
 
Pawnee Heights, Otis-Bison at Western Plains
Otis-Bison enters the 1A D-II sub-state in Ransom on Saturday as the No. 3 seed.
The Lady Cougars (17-16) face the No. 6-seeded Healy (0-27) in the first round. The winner of the match will face No. 2-seeded Dighton (17-5), which gets a first-round bye.
Pawnee Heights (9-24) is the No. 4 seed and will face host Western Plains, which is 3-27 and the No. 5 seed. The winner faces No. 1 seed and No. 3-ranked Victoria.
 
Larned enters sub-state tourney as No. 8 seed
Larned will encounted top-seeded Pratt, which is ranked No. 5 in 4A, at the sub-state hosted by Hugoton.
The No. 8-seeded Lady Indians (5-31) will open the tournament at 1 p.m.
 
Stafford set as No. 5 seed in sub-state tourney
Stafford (15-19) will be the No. 5 seed at the 1A D-II sub-state tournament hosted by South Barber in Kiowa.
The Lady Trojans will face the No. 5-seeded Cunningham (13-14) to open the tournament at 2 p.m.
